Congratulations!

Whether you are beginning your first pregnancy or you already have children, your pregnancy is an exciting time.  We are pleased to provide you with professional medical care and advice at this special time.  You can rest assured that our physicians and certified nurse midwives work closely together and want to partner with you in maintaining a healthy pregnancy.  We believe in providing health care that meets your individual needs.

At this time, you have either had a positive at home pregnancy test or have received confirmation from another healthcare provider, so what's next?  It is important that you establish care early in your pregnancy.  You should now call our office or request an appointment online.  Your first visit is usually 2-4 weeks after your missed period.

In preparing for your first visit, please review your options for OB Care below and begin writing down questions you may have for your initial visit.

We Offer:

  • Obstetricians and Certified Nurse Midwife care
  • Normal and high-risk obstetrics, including twin gestation, hypertension, diabetes and vaginal birth after cesarean section (VBAC)
  • Preconception counseling
  • Recurrent pregnancy loss counseling and evaluations
  • On-site Ultrasounds including:  Anatomy,  Nuchal Translucency Ultrasound and Level II

OB Care Options

At Augusta Health Care for Women, we offer three distinctively different options to experience prenatal care.   All three options provide you with an excellent team of healthcare providers, a balance of routine prenatal care and exams, as well as information during this exciting time.  Our goal is for you to choose the option that is most comfortable, convenient and meaningful to you.  With these three options, you can experience the patient-centered care that you have been looking for.   We ask that you review this information and be prepared to let your health care provider know at your New OB appointment which OB Care Option you prefer. Due to risk factors, some patients will require traditional care provided by a physician.

Centering PregnancyWe encourage you to take advantage of this unique, innovative and interactive option in prenatal care offered in our Fishersville office.  This option provides the most continuous interaction with your provider, allows you the opportunity to share your experience with other expectant moms who are due around the same time and provides extended discussions on such topics as nutrition, common discomforts of pregnancy, signs of labor, emotional concerns, preparing for the baby and much, much more. Be certain to let us know as soon as possible if you want to take advantage of this opportunity since space is limited to 10 expectant moms per delivery month.

After your confirmation of pregnancy and/or new OB appointment, your next nine (9) prescheduled visits will be approximately 2 hours each. Many of our Centering Pregnancy® patients have found it convenient to have these prescheduled visits, which allow you to notify your employer, babysitter and support person in advance.

With this option, there is no need to sign in at the registration window, and there is no time spent in the waiting room.    At the first session, you will be given instructions on the process for starting each session.  Each visit includes a prenatal check-up and an interactive, informative session with other expectant moms and dads/support person.

During this time, you will have individual visits for your nuchal translucency ultrasound (if desired), anatomy ultrasound, for specific testing and for any problem visits.

Following the ninth session, you will return to traditional one-on-one care for the remainder of your pregnancy.  Unless you have risk factors that require that you continue care with a physician, you can choose to either see a Physician or Certified Nurse Midwife.

Centering Pregnancy® is an exciting way for women and their families to experience prenatal care. Women spend more time with their health care provider and with other pregnant women, which gives them a chance to learn a lot more about pregnancy, childbirth, and parenting.

Traditional Care

This option allows you the choice of experiencing prenatal care the way it has been managed for decades with either a physician or certified nurse midwife.  Most women are familiar with this method of receiving prenatal care with 13 routine prenatal visits.   Following your confirmation of pregnancy and/or New OB appointment, you would begin your one-on-one care with a healthcare provider.  Visits are typically scheduled one visit at a time and can be scheduled Monday through Friday at varying times between 8:45 a.m. and 4:15 p.m.  In addition, birth preparation classes are offered through the hospital. Traditional Care is offered by both our Certified Nurse Midwives and Physicians and either the Fishersville or Lexington Office.  Some services are only performed in our Fishersville Office,  We will advise you at the time the service is requested and work to schedule a convenient time for you to travel to our Fishersville location.

Physician Traditional Care

If you chose, or risk factors require, you will have one primary physician that will see you for the majority of your routine prenatal visits. As you approach your due date, we encourage a visit   with each of the other physicians so you can have an opportunity to meet them in the event they are on call when you deliver.    Your primary physician will make every effort to deliver you. If you deliver when your primary physician is scheduled to be in the office, in most cases, they will be the one to deliver your baby.   Evenings and weekend care is handled by the physician on call.

Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM) Traditional Care

Our compassionate Certified Nurse Midwives are ALL Master's prepared, are Nationally Certified as Nurse Midwives in accordance with the American Midwifery Certification Board, and are members of The American College of Nurse Midwives. They hold both an Authorization to Prescribe Medication License as well as a Federal DEA number. They provide both obstetric and gynecologic care, and they attend births only at Augusta Health hospital.
